Rochester: Derby Day (scorekeeping)

Monday August 18
The plan today was to visit three local courses with three friends. we visited two.
We had categories for longest putt, CTP (drive Closest To Pin), Coolest Shot, Nearest Approach

Ellison: 64 (+8, @ course par 56)
Birdies (2) on hole 2, and hole 18 (finally), sidearm drives within 10-15 ft of basket.
Ben won most of the categories (CTP, Coolest Shot, off tree, almost dropped in )

Parma: 73 (+17, @ course par 56)
Birdies (2). hole 2 +20 ft putt and hole 9, 10 ft putt
Hole 4 was a disaster, plus bad putting and approaches throughout the course.
Creek splash (OB, not counted) on hole 16 (ricochet off tree).
(I am grateful no discs were lost though we were lucky to find errant throws.)
Coolest shot: Ben: sidearm approach hitting a tree, ricochet off to hit me in chest.

I decided to tag along with a friends to Ellison:
I mostly scored 4's, 7 pars (3), one 5 (hole 13), (@ par 56, 66, +10)

Drives were strong and long, approaches were mostly short, backhand was week.
Another power drive on hole 8, this past the basket about 20 feet. Missed birdie.

Rochester: Practice (Scorekeeping) at MCC

August 14, 2014 at MCC
After 2 years, I re-visited MCC with a friend. This is a short local course with water hazards (creek and ponds). There are two sets of holes, yellow and black (professional). We played the first 15 yellow holes actively, then the darkness descended so we threw cautiously short throws for 16 & 17, and walked hole 18 from the tee to the pin in the dark.

Most of the holes are 275 feet to 325 ft. I will plus/minus distance where appropriate
Hole1 : Water to Right/ Nice Forearm Drive, Short up (behind rocks), Up and Putt. +1
Hole2: Water to Right/ Nice backhand, to water then fade to left, Up and Putt (par)
Hole3: Short, water to left, Sidearm drive to pin, Short Putt *(-1)*
Hole4: Straight to pin on hill: Tree Crash on Backhand Drive, Approach to right, Approach to left, Long Putt +1
Hole5: Trees to right, Reeds and Creek to left. Forearm to fairway, wind to approach to reeds in water, recovered and long putt. Par
Hole6: Hill over creek and reeds, basket to right: Short Forearm before creek and reeds, tree crash approach, another approach and putt +1
Hole7: Long, basket on hill to left. Long sidearm drive, nice approach and putt (par)
Hole8: Short bending to right: Long slanted forearm drive to right, bad position, tree crash on approach, another approach, medium putt +1
Hole9: Straight over pond, Monster sidearm drive to right (hitting rocks on hole 10!), approach, and putt. (par)
Hole10: Short, Pond to right, Basket tucked behind trees: Low accurate backhand drive, approach and short putt (par)
Hole11: Basket to right in trees behind MCC sign: Drive to sign ! Cement crash. Approach to right, Approach to left, putt.+1
Hole 12: Long hole in right corner, open fairway blocked by tree. Sidearm Drive barely over tree, good approach and good putt (par!)
Hole 13: Narrow lane slants to basket right Nice approach, still in lane, tree crash approach, approach and putt +1
Hole 14: Drive out of trees, Basket slightly to right. Nice drive, approach to right, aprraqoch to left, putt.+1
Hole15: Straight ahead: Sidearm drive to trees, replaced to fairway, near approach (almost basket clank), and putt (par, counted as +1)

Hole16: Narrow lane curving to left, basket on hill to left.
Hole17: Basket to left, pine trees blocking basket and to right, water behind
Hole18: Heavily Wooded

Final (15 holes) , +7

Highlights: Excellent driving and putting.

Lowlights: Some approach shots were short and to the right.

This is a nice course. I want to play the black baskets next.

Rochester: Practice (Scorekeeping) at Churchville

August 8, 2014 at Churchville

Final 67, +13 (+3 from first time last week, ugh)

  • Highlights: only 5 pars, Holes 3,8,11,13,15, Long putt for bogey on basket 2, Nice forearm drives out of woods for holes 11 & 13
  • Lowlights: no birdies, horrible backhand for distance, many branch slowdowns, actually shot at wrong basket for 14! and Bad FAT ; First Available Tree crash on hole 16)
For all of its trees causing frustration, I still enjoy this course.

Rochester: Course at Churchville

Churchville: Deceptively simple, but not.
They are a lot more disc eating trees in the fairway of the holes in the woods.

Rochester: Practice (Scorekeeping) at Churchville (1st time)

Tonight I played a new course west of Rochester in Churchville. It is a flat course around a county park with open fields and sometimes a lot of trees. It is like a flat Ellison with some Chili mixed in.
It is considered a beginners course, for its short distances but some holes coming out of a gauntlet of trees or trying to throw in between trees spaced 8 to 10 feet (without an established lane) is very demanding.

I scored +10 (assumed par 54) with a birdie on hole 2.  I also had a beautiful backhand drive on Hole 17, almost made it past the boundary guards of a 20 ft bush. The throw was about 180+ft, maybe more.  I will be back and  I will post a map soon.

I want to break 56 or less here.

Rochester: Practice (Scorekeeping) At Ellison

This morning's practice was 6:30am.
I scored a 58 (+4 par) with two birdies (2), Hole 2 and 9 and (4) on 1,6,11,16  and (5) on 13.
See post on May 29 for new configuration of Ellison. Here is the course map

Here is the hole by hole:  (short putts < 10 feet, medium 10-20 ft)

Hole 1: Uphill to left, tree & bushes midway. drive, approach, short approach, putt (+1)
Hole 2: Uphill, short & straight. Drive and medium putt (-1)
Hole 3: Downhill to left, bordered by trees and bushes. Mediocre Drive, Good Approach, Short Putt (0)
Hole 4: Sharp uphill to left. Mediocre Drive, Good approach, Short Putt (0)
Hole 5: Sharp downhill. Good distance drive to right, cross approach, short putt (0)
Hole 6: Long(est) hole through trees: good drive, appoaches x2, medium putt (+1)
Hole 7: Straight through pine trees: Tree crash on drive, good approach, medium putt (0)
Hole 8: Straight with pine tree borders: Drive to left, approach to right too much, medium long putt ! (0)
Hole 9: Through trees to right: Power forehand drive, short putt (-1)
>Front 9 : PAR
Hole 10: Straight, Open and Uphill a bit to right (ravine to right): Drive, Approach, Short putt
Hole 11 : Straight, Long, gradually uphill, past trees: good drive, approach, short approach to right, medium putt (+1)
Hole 12: Straight downhill, trees to left, open field to right: Drive, Strong Approach, short putt (0)
Hole 13: Long, early trees, bordered by trees to right, basket behind large bushes. Branch crash on drive, medium 2nd throw, 3rd throw behond bushes, 4th throw backhand hyzer over bushes, medium putt. (+2)
Hole 14: Slightly uphill to left behind trees: Forehand drive, good approach, short putt (0)
Hole 15: Long, Early tree to left, trees to right. Forehand drive, good approach, medium putt (0)
Hole 16: Long, Early tree in front, open. Forehand tree crash, long approach to left +50 from basket, another approach, short putt (+1)
Hole 17: Short, basket within trees and exposed roots. Forehand drive way to right, solid approach, short putt (0)
Hole 17: Downhill within trees. Forehand drive, good approach, medium putt (0)
>Back 9 : +4

I think my gameplan was simple.
Make every throw count,
Use my drive to get as close to the basket as possible
Use my approach to land in from or near the basket
Feel confidant that I can putt within 15 feet

Next objectives:
68 or less for Parma (Parma 56 par)
64 or less for Chili (Chili 56 par)
60 or less for Basil (Basil 54 par, i think)

Rochester: Practice (Scorekeeping) Chili

July 18, 2014

Another early morning practice; Parma was not unlocked, decided on Chili

Rochester: Practice (Scorekeeping) Chili

Tuesday July 15, 2014

I played in the evening with friends. I am trying my backhand throw on shorter drives and surprisingly was not too disappointed. Hole 2, 3, 8, 16 was okay; hole 13 was poor.

5 pars, 10 (+1) 2 (+2), 1 (+4)
Score 72, (before adjusted by 2-3 OBs and in tree)

I think this is Par 56, with Hole 9 and 18 being par 4

Hole 11 is the longest hole at 911 ft. The issue is the break in concentration as we look for discs. Actually we look for discs mostly every hole.

Los Angeles: Practice/Fun

June 15, 2014: Practice at Los Angeles: Oak Grove (Hahamongna Park)

My daughters and a friend and I visited the first course to ever have permanent trees. Horrible layout, no signs.  Very disappointing.

Review: Course located in park. Short Course with trees and other obstacles (posts). One hole is over a ravine full of bushes and small trees. Very difficult to find next hole as there are no signs, only numbers in concrete pads that may or may not point to basket.

From PDGA: "Multi-terrained, oak lined course. World's 1st permanent polehole course. Requires a wide range of shots. #6 is out part of the summer (a summer camp permits that area). The infamous "Spider" hole - a alternate hole - is inserted uphill of 4's fairway while #6 is out."

Give me my Rochester courses any day of the week at any season too!

Rochester: Practice at Basil

June 5, Basil Marella

Visited Basil Marella in evening with two friends. Disappointing, not much to report about.
Forehands were strong, a lot of tree crashes, occasionally a lucky shot through the trees.
(Basil demands a tilt to the grip for weaving through the lane). Backhands were short and low and mostly to the right (Innova Star). I am using Innova Dart more for medium to short approaches

Hole 14 is a short hole with the basket at the edge of a creek. I had the distance to waters edge, nice birdie opportunity, not but made. I think I missed another birdie opportunity too.

Rochester: Practice @ New Ellison

May 29, Ellison

Ellison Park was reconfigured

The Course now curls back upon itself on the later holes rather than in the beginning,
The front 9 ends in the back of the course and continues back up front.

I have officially lost my claims to fame.

Hole 6 was eliminated and replaced by new Hole 2; I almost aced this short hole in 2013
Hole 8 was eliminated and replaced by new Hole 10; this was the dogleg to right, where I sank a 80+ft putt in 2013
Hole 4 was lengthened and reconfigured to Hole 18; this was the hole that practiced and remembered a 90+ drop

oh well.

Rochester: Practice at Chili

Thursday, May 8, 2014 at Chili

First time out this season at Chili with friends. Can't remember much except how glad I was to be playing.
